Juda ho ka bki tu maja ya ati ha- We are separate but I am always remembering you, is a art event about an intimate attachment to a place and a people, and investments into sharing that memory. In these photographs from Nepal and India, Samm Cohen has apparent admiration, warmth, and closeness to these countries. Many of these photographs show what she found most fascinating- the extreme contrasts in this civilization: the affluence and impoverished, the abundance of caring and tolerated apathy, the traditional rural and fashionable affected urban life, the untampered resources and overpolluted rivers. Samm Cohen had spent two months there, living with a family, volunteering at a school, trying to become familiar with the culture and customs. One can see, in her both film and digital photographs, the efforts this level of comfort brings while still seeking answers and exploration, yet another of the opposing elements that she experienced as a visitors in the East. This exhibit takes place at a school, a reflection of the place she had worked in Nepal, as she hopes to reveal and make conscious, visually and verbally, her experiences and new knowledge of a culture of vast differences and similarities to her own.
